Has Nintendo been stealing??

Nintendo created Donkey Kong back in those days and RARE developed a series of Donkey Kong games, created new characters.
I've heard that Rareware is not with Nintendo anymore, and Nintendo still owns their characters i.e. Diddy Kong, Funky Kong etc.
I'm just surprised how Nintendo owns other DK Characters that were not realistically theirs in the first place

Stealing? Companies like Sega and Rare are LETTING Nintendo use their characters. It would put Nintendo in a bad position if they started stealing trademarked characters, don't you think?

Which part of licensed property don't you get?...

Don't be an idiot, Nintendo didn't "steal" Sonic. They bought the rights to use him, and I'm sure Sega was more than happy to sell them, as a big seller like Brawl is going to make them a lot of money. Companies can sell limited rights to a character or series to other companies. That's not the same as selling the characters entirely, so no, before you ask Nintendo doesn't own Sonic now. What it means is that companies can pay to use characters that belong to other companies in their games.

HAL Laboratory still owns exclusive Rare characters that are exclusive to the Super Smash Bros. series. As for Sonic and Snake; Nintendo did not steal anything. From my understanding, I heard that Hideo Kojima wanted Solid Snake to be a playable character in Melee, but the project was already set to be released November 21, 2001 (Japan) and it was unfortunately too late. The Japanese website of SSBB had a poll concerning on what third party character people wanted. Sonic was voted the most; and HAL asked Sega for permission and the wish was granted because Sonic was the most popular third party character.
