In Sonic adventure DX / 2 / Battle, you will need to spend lots of time and there will be a gradual change. As a beginner, to understand this process, it is recommended that you simply leave your adult Chao for one Chao year (3 hours in Gamecube, or 1.5 to 2 hours Dreamcast) or feed it continuously and you can reduce the time needed to reach second evolution. You will notice that your adult Chao begins to gradually change shape over time. Remember to give it at least one Chao year for the change.
Once your Chao has changed, you can now give it a trait or simply leave it as it is (it is Stamina type if you leave it as it is).
A Sonic Chao can be turned blue if you give it Speed type on its Second evolution.
