A Chao sleeps for about 5 minutes, there is no point to actually letting it sleep. Even if its mad, it cools itself in a while, then you can start petting it to make it happy again- Even if you've totally abused a Chao never give up! petting it could help you save it from dying. Heart fruits have been rumoured to Shorten Chao life, but this does work in the original DC Sonic adventure! Abuse it! Give it Heart fruits, then at the age of 4 / 5, make sure it starts to like you- there we go, Chao had a shorter life and still reincarnated.
