These creatures are called Nightopians and can be raised like Chao. SonicTeam is also the official creator of them, but alas, Nightopians are not as cute as Chao.
This is the newest A-Life game. Sadly its not Chao, but they are very alike, you might be pleased

Give your Chao lots of Dark fruit to turn it dark, it doesn't work with one. Actually,
Here's a list of things that'll waste your rings:
eggs
Hero Fruit
Dark Fruit

There's no point buying Hero fruit, Dark fruit or eggs

those are a major waste of money in the Black Market. You can just pet Chao Hero / Dark. I don't see why Sonic team removed the 'Smart fruit'. Surely it was better than the Trait fruits.

3) Boredom
4) Mood
5) Belly

Why did not Sonicteam consider making Luck / Intelligence visible like every other trait? Boredom= when Chao is bored it will play with a toy that it has got from kindergarten or the races.
Mood varies to which character you have chosen. e.g. If you abused Chao, mood will be low. Or if the Chao has not met a character before, its mood is neutral.
Belly- The Chao's appetite

Belly only really matters on GBA...

where the chao will NOT eat if it is not hungry. On the cube you can forcefeed it regardless.
