Anyone know why the second SoulReaver game is so linear in comparison to the first?

I know this isn't "soulreaver forum", but someone's got to have an oppinion on that. I played the hell out of the first game. found every glyph, emblem piece, and eldrich stone. Took me weeks.
Then i play the second game, and the story is linear. there's no sidetracking, no sidestepping, no treasurehunting, no warpgate finding. . . It just "pushes" you foreward. The only nifty thing is the fact that you get to wail on demons and humans instead of vampires for a change. And the elemental augmentations of the reaver Do nothing except help with puzzles, and work as a torch. . . In the first one, the fire augmentation incinerated enemies.
Once i find the third one, if i'm as unimpressed with it as i was the second, I'm not even going to bother with the blood omen set.
