I mean, he doesn't read a lot of books or play card games or anything. It's hard to be a nerd while saving the world from a mad scientist all the time. But he is a sap, what with all that power of friendship makes you invincible crap.

Well, friends give him motivation, plus his "goodness" keeps him from losing focus on things like revenge or guilt. Not to be sappy, but it is easier for him to control his energy, as well as energy from the emeralds. Besides, in SatSR, Darkspine Sonic is fueled by emotions, and he doesn't burn rings (ring energy), nor is he invincible.
