Have you ever noticed that Chao "ball" above your Chao's head? This indicates if it is happy, sad, mad, embarrassed, confused or asleep. Below, you can see the types of moods your Chao can be in, depending on the Chao ball/halo/spike.
Exclamation Mark: Your Chao is excited about something! They might have seen something new, or they might be having a good day. Usually this means your Chao is in a good mood.
Question Mark: Your Chao is confused. They might have a lot on their mind, or are curious about something they experienced. The Chao's mood varies, but it is usually normal.
Swirl: Your Chao is upset about something. They might have gotten hurt (by you or another Chao), or you might have woken them up after a good sleep. This means your Chao is in a bad mood.
Normal: If your Chao has a regular Chao Ball, it is usually normal. Not happy or sad, but just normal.
The Chao ball is not the only indication of the Chao's different moods. There are other signs or actions a Chao can perform that can indicate a different mood.
Lying down, eyes closed: Your Chao is asleep. They usually wake up in ten minutes or so. Let them sleep, and don't upset them!
Jumping up and down, laughing: Your Chao loves you, and wants some attention. Pet the little fella, for goodness sakes!
Rubbing against character's legs: Your Chao is showing affection for your character. Usually they want attention, while some Chao do this all the time because they are spoiled and want more attention.
These are the different Chao moods. Now you know even more about your Chao, so this gives you a chance to become closer with your new best friend.
