Once you have hatched your first Chao, you need to know how to raise it. You should probably give it a name at the Fortune-Teller's house in the Chao Kindergarten, check on it's stats at the doctor, and know it's favorite fruit. Get to know your Chao. Giving your Chao it's favorite fruit will increase your relationship with you and make it like you more.
Once you start raising your Chao, be prepared to take a bunch of time out of your schedule. Raising Chao is very time consuming, especially if you want to get into it. Pet your Chao with your character so it will like that certain character. Pick it up and nuzzle it! Remember: your Chao won't like every single character. Feed your Chao some of the nuts that come from the trees so it will gain stamina and stay full. Don't hurt your Chao - if you hit it or throw it, they will dislike you more and more. When your Chao starts sneezing or acting weird, take it to the doctor, and it will give it some medicine to cure the sickness.
After two-three hours, a cocoon will form around your Chao. Don't worry! This is perfectly normal. When it evolves, it will take a different form and will look much more diverse. This indicates that your Chao has evolved. Depending on which characters it likes, it can become a Hero, Dark or Neutral Chao (more on this in the appropriate section). When your Chao is mature, it might have flowers around it, along with a heart above its head. This means it wants to mate. Put an Adult Chao next to it, and if it is attracted to the Chao, they will make an egg which can be hatched. Mating can get extremely rare Chao, as well as some cool-looking ones as well. Mating two high stat Chao also makes an S Chao. When your Chao is five years old (12-20 hours of life) it will either die, or reincarnate and live another life. If you treated your Chao good, it will reincarnate. If you weren't as nice as you should have been, it will die and never come back.
Now that you know how to raise your Chao, experiment and have fun with these new virtual pets. Take care of your Chao, treat it good and get more Chao so they can have friends.
