they're used to trap other things, like chaos. But they can't hold an infinite amount. The master emerald is needed to neutralize all the other emeralds so that the black emerald can absorb the rest. Trying to absorb multiple emeralds is too much for a regular black emerald.

So it's another thing that has no real base in the game series (such as the Mobius/Earth theory, or the fact that you don't have to say "Chaos Control" to do it, both made by Sonic X) that makes the series seem different than it really is?

if you already have the seven chaos emeralds you'll go to the master emerald chamber and turn them all into super emeralds one by one. They change back at the end of the game though.

I figure a full charged super emerald is worth two sets of chaos emeralds, but usually they're only double strength, or 1/7 of maximum power.
