so will it aoutmatically go back to its original form or is it like once in a blue moon?

exceptions are extremely rare, and usually it dies soon after it should anyway. You probably sleep for around ten hours, so if it isn't done, give it a few more hours after you wake up. If its age is two or older though, you shouldn't have to.

Will it drown if you do that? Can swimming too much when it can't hurt it?

and most likely they will eventually get themselves out of the water, but he meant for the character to stand in water.
|
|
Chao can't drown. They eventually climb out...

but what I meant was that your character should stand in the water, because that way chao can't come up to him/her asking to be petted.
