But isn't the final cut scene before the fight awesome? Go back to story mode, and select the last choice on the last story mode. It's awesome to do it over and over again...
And about Sonic living, but Shadow dieing: Shadow used all of his strength, while Sonic maintained his power. Notice how Shadow is stronger than Sonic during the final battle. He wasted all of his strength on anger and didn't have enough to survive the final chaos control.
Of course, if you want everything that you know about Sonic the Hedgehog games to be a lie, you can believe the Sonic X story. It thinks that he lost his bracelets, which (according to them) maintain his power. This also includes their theory that Chris gave his surviving bracelet, along with a new one, when he "came back to life," which also isn't true. If you look closely, Sonic brings both bracelets back to the ship.
