No, it's not the tone of his voice, it's the expressions he makes on his face.
+ His eyes turn red after he gets his body parts sliced off.

Yeah, that's probably it. But there's also something about his voice that reminds me of Shadow. I just can't point it out...

That's it! Yeah, like some of the first few phrases that he says to Eggman in SA2B. I can't recall what they are right now though, but it was something like, "Thank you for releasing me, my master. I will grant you one wish."
