Well, all you have to do to get a Hero Chao is raise it with the hero characters (Sonic, Tails, and/or Knuckles) and wait for it to evolve. A sure sign that it will be a Hero Chao is the shape of the head, which will have these odd little "hair" things bunched at the top, and the colour of the wings, which, I do believe is a yellowish colour... If it is a normal chao (non-coloured) it will be white with blue tips.

It is exactly opposite for a Dark Chao. You must raise it with the villians (Shadow, Eggman, and/or Rouge) and wait for it to evolve. It will be a Dark Chao if it has a jagged, pointy spike-like shape on its head, and the wings will be red. It will also have a devil tail... If you are raising a normal chao (not a coloured chao) it will be black with a red crescent-like figure on its chest, and its tips will be red.

And I am thinking that I just wasted a bunch of time pointing out the obvious. o.x;
